How to Make Herbal Syrups

A sweet, concentrated herbal preparation made by combining a strong herbal infusion or decoction with a sweetener, most often honey or sugar. Herbal syrups are used to preserve the liquid for a short time, improve flavor, and make herbs easier to take.

Best For

  • Making herbs easier to take, especially for children and anyone who dislikes strong herbal flavors
  • Soothing the throat and mouth
  • Supporting cough, cold, and seasonal wellness formulas
  • Delivering herbs in a sweet, concentrated liquid form
  • Short-term refrigerated storage of water-based herbal preparations

Shelf Life

Herbal syrup has a short shelf life because it is water-based. Most should be refrigerated and used within about 1–3 months, depending on the recipe, sweetener, and storage conditions. Syrups made with more honey or sugar usually keep longer than lighter syrups.

Basic Herbal Lotion Making

  1. Choose your herb or herbal blend.
  2. Make a strong herbal infusion or decoction, depending on the herb being used.
  3. Strain out all plant material.
  4. Measure the finished liquid.
  5. Return the liquid to the pot if gentle reheating is needed.
  6. Add honey, sugar, or another sweetener and stir until fully dissolved.
  7. Simmer gently if needed to slightly thicken, but do not boil hard.
  8. Remove from heat and let cool.
  9. Pour into a clean bottle or jar. Seal, label, and refrigerate.

Inspiration

From Philippians, Chapter 4:

6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus”
