How to Make a Herbal Balm

A herbal balm is a firm, oil-and-wax preparation made by blending infused oils with a higher proportion of wax than a salve. It is designed to be more solid, longer-lasting on the skin, and more protective, creating a barrier that helps lock in moisture and support dry or irritated areas.

Best For

  • Deeply moisturizing dry or chapped skin
  • Protecting skin from wind, cold, and harsh weather
  • Creating a long-lasting moisture barrier
  • Soothing rough or irritated areas
  • Locking in hydration after applying oils or water-based products

Shelf Life

6 – 12 months

Basic Balm Making Method

  1. Prepare or measure your carrier oil (infused or plain).
  2. Combine carrier oil and beeswax in a double boiler.
  3. Gently heat until the beeswax is fully melted and blended with the oil.
  4. Adjust consistency if needed (more wax for a firmer balm, more oil for a softer balm).
  5. Remove from heat and stir in any optional ingredients (like essential oils or vitamin E).
  6. Carefully pour mixture into clean containers. Allow balm to cool completely and set before sealing and labeling.

Inspiration

From Philippians, Chapter 4:

6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus”
