How to Make a Salve

A salve is a semi-solid herbal preparation made by combining infused oil with beeswax for external use.

Best For

  • Dry Skin
  • Skin Irritations
  • Minor Scrapes, Scratches and Cuts

Shelf Life

6–12 months

Basic Salve Method

  1. Infuse oil: Gently warm herbs in carrier oil over low heat or use a slow infusion method until fully extracted. Honestly, the slow infusion method is best.
  2. Strain oil: Remove all plant material using cheesecloth or fine strainer.
  3. Melt wax: Combine infused oil with beeswax in a double boiler until fully melted.
  4. Test consistency: Drop a small amount on a cold plate—adjust wax if needed (more wax = firmer salve).
  5. Pour into containers: Carefully pour mixture into clean, dry tins or jars. For best results, use a squeeze type bottle for this step.
  6. Cool completely: Let sit undisturbed until fully solid before sealing. Do not cover until it is completely cool.

Inspiration

From Philippians, Chapter 4:

6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus”
